Become a greyhound foster carer

To become ready for permanent adoption, our greyhounds are fostered for a period of three weeks to help them adjust to their new life as a pet.

GAP Tasmania could not operate without our loving volunteer foster carers who open their homes to our dogs. GAP Tasmania Fostering is a great way for animal lovers to experience the joy of having a dog in their life without making the commitment of adopting a dog for life.  We are very flexible in how we accommodate those who wish to volunteer as Foster Carers. If you need to go away during your foster period or if for any other reason you can’t keep your dog we’ll find a new place for your dog as quickly as possible.

Fostering a greyhound requires little experience, a love of dogs, patience and understanding and a fully fenced yard.  We encourage people from all walks of life to get involved in fostering a greyhound. The more diversity in living arrangements we can offer our dogs, the easier it is to match every dog to the right home.

Foster Carers must have access to a vehicle to be able to transport their greyhound to one of GAP Tasmania’s approved veterinary surgeons should the program manager approve the need for veterinary advice or in the case of an emergency. Foster carers may also be required to pick up or drop off dogs to a meeting point with Gap staff.

If you have fallen in love with the greyhound you are fostering contact the Gap staff asap and let them know so they dont line up a new home and can complete the adoption with you. The adoption fee if you foster the greyhound is reduced to $250 provided you haven’t accepted the gratuity payment.

Your foster greyhound from GAP Tasmania will arrive to you desexed, microchipped, C5 vaccinated, bathed, worm and flea treated, teeth polished and temperament tested.  It will arrive with a collar, lead, muzzle, coat and ID tag along with a bag of dry feed.  We require our foster carers to supplement the dry feed with pet mince and you can apply for a $5 per day gratuity payment to cover this cost (not available for self foster adoption)

Foster carers receive ongoing support from the staff at Gap as well as our foster carer mentor who has fostered over 60 greyhounds herself.

Even if you only foster once, you are making a big contribution to the quality of life of a truly magnificent dog!

If you feel you have room in your home and heart to offer one of our dogs, please complete and submit the Foster Carer Registration below.

Once we receive your registration, our GAP Tasmania foster care liaison officer  will contact you to discuss finding a greyhound for you to foster. Our foster care liaison officer is in the office Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays 9am till 1pm.

**Please note (17 April 2020) we have experienced a high number of foster care registrations and have placed all the available dogs, we are currently working through assessments, desexing and recovery and will have more available soon.

Foster Carers play a vital role in the operation of the Greyhound Adoption Program Tasmania.

It is with our Foster Carers that we gather information to help us match our greyhounds to the most suitable homes. Our Foster Carers introduce the greyhounds to new experiences and teach them the basics to enable them to adapt to different household environments.

We believe our Foster Carers do an amazing job and deserve to be recognised and rewarded, so we are introducing a GAPTas Foster Carer rewards scheme as follows:

GAPTas Bronze Foster Carer:           Foster one greyhound and receive a GAPTas Bronze Foster Carer cap

GAPTas Silver Foster Carer:             Foster ten greyhounds and receive an embroidered GAPTas Silver Foster Carer Polo Top

GAPTas Gold Foster Carer:               Foster twenty five greyhounds and receive an embroidered GAPTas Gold Foster Carer Vest

GAPTas Platinum Foster Carer:        Foster fifty greyhounds and receive an embroidered GAPTas Platinum Foster Carer Soft Shell Jacket

In addition to this all Foster Carers will receive a $200 Gift Voucher for every four greyhounds they foster.

For a greyhound to count towards the tally of the number of greyhounds cared for by a Foster Carer, that greyhound must have been with the Foster Carer for a period of at least three weeks.

Greyhounds in pre fostering or boarding are not eligible to be counted towards the tally of the number of greyhounds fostered.

The Gift Voucher shall be provided for greyhounds fostered in the 2016/17 financial year onwards.

The records maintained by GAP shall be evidence of attainment of a reward and no dispute shall be entered into.
